Mail's here! Cape Breton photographer Chuck Wrathall shares his creative journey
Chuck Wrathall is a jack of many trades. Throughout his journey, from his early days as a musician to a stellar photographer on Instagram, he’s kept himself busy in a lot of different fields- carpentry, tourism, and wilderness survival to name a few! He calls himself a “woodsman”, and this proves true with the smallest glance through his amazing photographs of the great outdoors that make you want to drop off the grid (or at least take a hike). It’s Chuck’s chill vibe that makes him an awesome new Paper Hearts Pen Pal!
Your Instagram game is super strong! Where do you like to hang out online and why? I split my time online in four ways: posting to Instagram, responding to client emails, checking the local and world news, and (mostly) on YouTube to learn new things and enhance my skills.
That’s a healthy amount of productivity; what do you do to relax?
My time in the woods is when I’m most relaxed. It’s the perfect way to slow down and clear your mind. I’ll hike upriver to a waterfall, string up a hammock, brew up a coffee, and just absorb the environment around me.
You lead a really unique and varied life in terms of pastimes. If your life was a TV show, which one would it be?
If you mixed Survivorman with That ‘70s Show and HGTV you would basically have my life, haha.
We all need those people in our life who speak the same language as us. Where do you find support in your creative endeavours?
One of the things I heard years ago that really stuck with me was “surround yourself with like-minded people”. It’s simple yet so impactful when actually done. Some of my biggest support has come from the people I’ve met through the Cape Breton Creative Weekends. It’s basically a group of thirty to forty Instagram photographers meeting up for two days of adventure in the Cape Breton Highlands.
The other big chunk of support stems from my online community in the outdoor/bushcraft niche. I have come across some incredibly inspiring folk from Instagram who definitely keep me motivated and moving forward.
